Yorkies love to please their owners. Offering praise and treats for good behavior will work better than harsh corrections. Socialize your yorkie from an early age to strange situations, people and places but take into new situations slowly and always in a calm and happy atmosphere. Despite their small size, Yorkies can participate in and excel in agility and obedience exercises.
Yorkies are generally healthy but can have eye anomalies and a luxating patella (a kneecap which floats or is dislocated). In order to avoid a luxating patella limit the Yorkie’s jumping height, especially as a puppy
Garlic, Avocado, Yeast, Chocolate. Rhubarb, Citrus Oil, Macadamia Nuts, Cat Food, Grapes and Raisins in small amounts can cause sudden kidney failure, spinach, Milk, sugar substitutes, wild mushrooms, iron, peaches, cherries, alcohol, Leeks, Mustard, Fat trimmings (fat is not digested properly by yorkies and can cause Pancreatitis, blood infections and internal bleeding). Caffeine is toxic for dogs. Onions, chives and green tomatoes are toxic. Potatoes are another example of toxicity due to a compound blocks a chemical (acetylcholine) which dogs need to transmit nerve impulses. Beets, collard, eggplant and green peppers should be avoided.
